The Medieval village of Cartmel is one mile from Hill farm. This ancient village is the oldest and most picturesque in the South Lakes. With its 120 listed buildings, winding, cobbled streets lead to pretty cottages, bridges, and streams, four pubs, shops, and eateries; and of course, Britain's smallest and friendliest National Hunt Racecourse. Meetings are held in May,June, July and August, Attracting crowds from all over the country. Those with an interest in fine dining can indulge at the famous Michelin star restaurant, L' Enclume, found by the riverside just off the village square.

One of the best examples of Ecclesiastical buildings in the North also lies off the village square. The 12th century medieval Priory has changed little over the centuries, with its beautiful stained glass windows, sculptures and ancient choir stalls.

Leading off the square with its market cross, water pump and fish slabs is the Cartmel Priory Gatehouse, owned by the National Trust. Also, the village shop, home of the famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Close by, the pretty village of Grange over Sands looks out across the spectacular Morecambe bay. A popular spot for bird watchers, as many species take advantage of the mild climate in the area. The whole area is excellent for walking, riding, golf, fishing, and sailing, with Lake Windermere less than ten miles away. Cartmel is an ideal base for exploring the Lake District to the north and the Yorkshire dales to the West.
